Cooperation Programme FAO / Italy in favor of agricultural development in developing countries was established in 1980. Since then, more than 400 projects were carried out in over 80 countries worldwide. These projects contribute to the improvement of food security in poor and vulnerable through the transfer of resources, knowledge and skills. Among the various collaborations FAO / Italy, it mentions the “Promoting Sustainable Development of Mountain Area” program.
Many of the poorest people with problems of food insecurity live in mountain regions, which represent some of the most fragile ecosystems on the planet. The project, in line with the Millennium Development Goals, says the Partnership for the Promotion of Sustainable Development of the Mountains (Mountain Partnership), whose central coordinating unit is housed at FAO and coordinates more than 180 governments, NGOs and intergovernmental organizations to promote and facilitate the activities for sustainable development of mountain areas. The aim is to fight poverty and achieve sustainable development of mountain areas. This will be achieved through technical support aimed at a sustainable development of mountain areas, such as climate change, biodiversity, desertification, food security and poverty reduction; promotion activities aimed at the inclusion of the issue of mountain areas the international political agenda and in important debates as the Rio Convention and the Rio + 20 process; more awareness, at all levels, of the importance of mountain ecosystems and mountain populations, in order to allocate appropriate resources for the development and conservation of these areas.
