Address the problem of water shortage is considered an objective priority of the cooperation program between Italy and FAO. The use of water resources and the way they are handled strongly influence on all aspects of human existence: health, food, industrial production environment. It follows that water issues have a huge burden on our quality of life: this is why the international community and the scientific world watching with concern the current situation of deterioration of quality and quantity which is going to encounter the global water resources. In many developing countries the increase in agricultural productivity is the key to reducing poverty. In Asia, for example, rural development and agriculture between 1970-1990 has launched a high economic growth, income growth and improved nutrition. Irrigation is essential to increase productivity and quality of crops. Irrigation procures direct benefits to farmers through higher income more stable and a higher value of agricultural land. The community will derive benefits through better salaries, less expensive food, more varied diet therefore positive health effects and that large-scale play an important role in all areas.
The Governorate of Marjayoun, located in the southeast of Lebanon, is one of the areas of the country most affected by water scarcity, mainly because of the devastating effects of the 2006 conflict on the irrigation system and water channeling. Through technical assistance programs and strengthening skills, the project funded by Italy through the FAO aims to improve the quality of the water body and to ensure the best and optimal conditions of use of agricultural funds. The introduction of modern irrigation systems and flexible will allow farmers and water managers to reduce water losses by investing in modern irrigation techniques. The overall objective is to facilitate the sustainable development of irrigated agriculture and help increase the availability of food, food security and poverty alleviation in the Near East.
