FAO provides technical assistance to countries that ask to be helped in the development of its rural sector and in the formulation of policies and programs to reduce hunger. Also assists countries in economic planning and drafting of draft laws and national strategies for rural development; It mobilizes and manages funds from industrialized countries, from development banks and other sources, ensuring that projects achieve their goals.
Under the Cooperation Programme Italy / FAO, the project Improving the nutritional levels and household food security in Egypt, with a focus on women and young people aims to assist the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and related institutions in an effort to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable communities, particularly infants and children, the disadvantaged rural districts of Upper Egypt, through the creation of a secure environment in which women and young people have access to enough diversified food, both animal and vegetable production, and have the knowledge and skills necessary for adequate levels of production.
The nutrition and household food security have become a salient issue that, in Egypt, requires urgent action. The project is based on some main strategies:
– Improving nutrition through food production activities and income generation;
– Improving the eating behavior of children through education, interpersonal communication and social mobilization;
– Use an integrated and participatory approach to improve access to food and nutritional levels of families, in a decentralized manner.
Information campaigns will be organized to convey a maximum of messages regarding health and nutrition of the youngest, also by sensitizing their families and communities.
