This summer there is an increase in satisfaction with Blue Flags, which shows a steady increase, in spite of the reduced economic resources, the will of the many municipalities not to put in second place the focus on the environment. The international recognition awarded by the FEE – Foundation for environmental education, rewards municipalities that treat their most beaches, respecting and enhancing the environment and managing the land sustainably.
The Blue Flag is a prestigious award, established in 1987, European Year of the Environment, which is awarded every year in 48 countries, with the support and participation of the two UN agencies: UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) with which the FEE has signed a Memorandum of global partnership.
A total of 280 beaches awarded in Italy and lead the region is Liguria. On the podium the Tuscany and Marche. Fourth Campania with 14 flags, fifth Puglia comes to 11. High number of confirmations of Commons and the good performance of the tourist landings to show that a significant number has embarked choices of sustainability ensuring the quality and quantity of services provided the full environmental compatibility. The flag is assigned based on certain criteria guided by the spirit of “green” ranging “from the absolute validity of bathing water ‘efficiency of water treatment, waste collection from the pedestrian areas, cycle paths and green spaces , up to the amount of all the services on the beaches. More precisely, the values taken into account for the award of Blue Flags are four: Environmental Education and Information; Water quality; Environmental management; and security services. Among the requirements, besides the obvious (such as those relating to water quality and the cleanliness of the beach), within the presence of toilets and containers for recycling, the map display and the code of conduct, the appropriate number of rescue personnel and promotion of sustainable means of transport to get to the beach.
